General Notes

This 20-hour part-time position ends on December 31, 2024. The position offers a basic benefits package that is 50% employer paid for part-time employees. Optional medical insurance for employees' dependents is up to 25% employer paid for part-time employees.

Location: UT Austin's Lake Austin Center, 3001 Lake Austin Blvd, Austin, TX 78703.

Security sensitive: criminal background check conducted on selected candidate. Hiring decision is contingent upon applicant clearing background check.

Purpose

The Curatorial Assistant will work with the Curator in the preparation, preservation, data capture, and accessioning of material into the UT Insect Collection, as well as perform other tasks essential to the general operation of the Insect Collection such as managing incoming and outgoing loans, maintaining collection safety procedures, and coordinating activities of external researchers and other visitors to the collection.

Responsibilities

  • Preparing, accessioning, and databasing material in the UT Insect Collection
  • Maintenance of lab supplies, spaces, and safety procedures

Assist the UT Insect Collection in public outreach events, field collections of specimens, and specimen imaging.

Required Qualifications

A university-level degree in entomology, biology, museum studies, or a related field that includes credit hours in an entomology class with a collections component.

At least 3 months experience in museum collections or entomology.

Knowledge of ordinal-level insect taxonomy. Familiarity with the basic functions of natural history collections. Relevant education and experience may be substituted as appropriate.

Preferred Qualifications

A university-level degree in entomology, biology, museum studies, or a related field that includes credit hours in an entomology class with a collections component. At least 6 months experience in museum collections or in entomology. Knowledge of family-level insect taxonomy with a demonstrated specialization and/or publication record in a particular taxon. Familiarity with the basic functions of natural history collections.

Salary Range

$29.00 hourly + depending on qualifications
