As a Herd Manager, you will be responsible for ensuring the well-being and productivity of the herd, which includes cattle and other wildlife animals. Your primary role will involve managing the feeding, watering, and monitoring the animals, as well as managing their medical needs and maintaining the facilities. Work is performed under general direction, with broad responsibility for planning, organizing and prioritizing work.

WHAT YOU'LL DO:

  • Manage the daily care for the herd, including feeding, watering, and maintaining clean and healthy living conditions.
  • Manage and monitor the animals' health, identify signs of illness or distress, and administer appropriate medical treatments as necessary. Coordinate with veterinarians for regular check-ups and vaccinations.
  • Manage the breeding process to ensure successful mating and maintain breeding records.
  • Manage rotational grazing and ensure the availability of fresh and nutritious pasture for the animals.
  • Manage the maintenance and repair of fences, gates, and other facilities to ensure the safety and containment of the herd.
  • Manage pasture maintenance program.
  • Manage the movement of the herd to different pastures or grazing areas, considering seasonal and weather conditions.
  • Maintain accurate records of herd activities, including health, breeding, births, and inventory.
  • Manage and maintain inventory of animal feed and supplies.
  • Operate and maintain farm equipment required for herding and feeding tasks.
  • Manage the culling process.
  • Collaborate with other farm staff and management to coordinate activities and achieve ranch objectives.
  • Manage budget within scope of responsibilities.
  • Adhere to sustainable ranching practices and contribute to the overall welfare of the environment.
  • Ensure compliance with all local, state, federal and company health and safety policies, procedures and regulations. Administer and communicate company health and safety policies and procedures.
  • Supervisory duties: Carry out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization's policies and applicable laws. Responsibilities include interviewing, hiring, and training employees; planning, assigning, and directing work; appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining employees; addressing complaints and resolving problems.

WHAT YOU'LL NEED:

  • High school diploma or general education diploma (GED); three to five years previous herding or related agricultural experience; or an equivalent combination of education experience.
  • Farm and/or Ranch Management certification preferred.
  • Knowledge of animal care, health management, feeding and breeding practices preferred.
  • Basic understanding of tractor/agriculture equipment operation and maintenance.
  • Ability to identify signs of illness or distress in animals.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Excellent problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to handle physically demanding tasks.
  • Ability to work irregular hours, including nights, weekends and holidays in all weather conditions.
  • Ability to lift 100 lbs.
  • Valid drivers' license and clean driving record.
