Description

The Image Pathologist Assistant is responsible for performing responsibilities pertaining to Quantitative Image Analysis including assisting the Breast pathologists in organizing and conducting all aspects of quantitative biomarker assessment and chromogenic in situ hybridization studies for breast and other tumors. This dynamic position performs functions related to Microscopic examination, Quantitative Digital image analysis, reporting of results, quality and proficiency and technical troubleshooting if necessary including discrepancy resolution. These functions are performed primarily for Breast service. This position must perform and / or understand a wide variety of processes to include tissue grossing, histology, understanding pathology reports, microscopic examination and proficiency in semi-quantitative and quantitative measuring of biomarker expression, CISH quantitation and other duties as assigned and required following approved Standard Operating Procedures. In addition the Image Pathologist assistant under the general direction of the Breast Pathology Director finalizes biomarker reports and facilitates sign out of these cases as necessary.

  • Follows the laboratory procedures for specimen handling and processing
  • Adheres to the laboratory's quality control policies, documents all quality control activities, instrument and procedural calibrations and maintenance performed.
  • Follows the laboratory's established policies and procedures whenever test systems are not within the laboratory's established policies and procedures whenever test systems are not within the laboratory's established acceptable level of performance.
  • Demonstrates capability of identifying problems that may adversely affect test performance or reporting of test results and must either correct the problems or immediately notify the General Supervisor, technical Supervisor, or Laboratory Director.
  • Documents all corrective actions taken when test systems deviate from the laboratory's established performance specifications.
  • Coordinates work flow for all breast biomarker cases.
  • Researches, verifies, corrects, and communicates quality and discrepancy issues related to breast markers using complex reasoning ability, established protocols, and the appropriate documentation.
  • Facilitates breast Biomarker workflow with histology and IHC labs.
  • Assesses quality of IHC by microscopic examination before performing image analysis.
  • Incorporate quality assessment into daily screening process and is responsible for ensuring accurate records are maintained.
  • Performs Quality Control (QC) check of controls to ensure the accuracy of the immunohistochemistry staining.
  • Photomicrographs representative areas of biomarkers to be included on final report and performs a Quality Control (QC) function during the image capture process.
  • Calibrates the image analysis system based on protocol, maintains records
  • Conducts quantitative image analysis appropriately annotating areas and creates preliminary report for pathologist sign out
  • Participates in all proficiency testing as outlined by the Breast pathology director
  • Demonstrates the ability to accurately prioritize and analyze the cases.
  • Interacts directly with pathologists regarding all image analysis related activities and works under their direct supervision.
  • Identifies problems that may adversely affect test performance or reporting of test results and either correct the problems or immediately notify the director of breast pathology.
  • Maintains service records for the image analysis equipment, troubleshoots and request service as needed.
  • Maintains confidentiality of sensitive information concerning patients, physicians, employees, clients, vendors, and the company.
  • Ensures compliance with all local, federal, CLIA, CAP, and NYS DOH regulations.
  • Performs Quality Control and Quality Assurance tests as required. Maintains all necessary documentation and current logs.
  • Reports all concerns of test quality and/or patient or employee safety to supervisor/ Director
  • Maintains a clean work environment.
  • Has a good understanding and working knowledge of Laboratory Information Systems.
Qualifications

* Degree in biological, chemical, or chemical laboratory science or related field, and / or
* Certified as a Pathologist Assistant (ASCP OR AAPA)
* 5+ years' experience with quantitative image analysis for biomarker assessment and In situ hybridization (FISH/CISH). Exclusive experience in Oncologic profiling is preferred.
* Must meet the Clinical Laboratory Improvement Act (CLIA '88) criteria to perform high complexity testing
* High degree of technical knowledge in Quantitative image analysis and FISH/CISH.
* Moderate knowledge of oncologic pathology (Breast pathology) relative to biomarker assessment.
* Ability to communicate effectively (gross descriptions).
* Requires a high degree of care and attention with strict adherence to defined clinical testing protocols.
* Demonstrated skills and high level of attention to detail in technical data interpretation and ability to troubleshoot.
* Visual acuity (including color discrimination) and analytical skill to distinguish fine detail.
* Manual dexterity to use common laboratory equipment and perform sterile techniques as required.
* Must possess ability to sit for long periods of time.
* Must possess ability to perform repetitive motion.
* Willingness to work overtime if necessary.
