Must be authorized to work in the United States. This is an Austin-based position, but has possibility of being a fully remote role.

Purpose

The Knight Center for Journalism in the Americas at the University of Texas at Austin seeks a bilingual journalist to edit its trilingual digital news magazine, LatAm Journalism Review (LJR). The Knight Center is a global leader in online journalism training, and LJR is a publication of reference for news and information about journalism and press freedom in Latin America and the Caribbean.

Responsibilities
  • Edit Knight Center's trilingual (English, Spanish, and Portuguese) LatAm Journalism Review (LJR) digital news magazine focused on journalism and press freedom in Latin America and the Caribbean. Create English language articles for publishing and translate Spanish or Portuguese language articles for English-speaking consumers. Oversee and collaborate with LJR's global team of writers and freelancers by assigning and editing stories, ensuring deadlines are met, and creating an editorial calendar.

  • Create a weekly trilingual LatAm Journalism Review newsletter promoting LJR content and Knight Center news. Prepare content for the newsletter and think strategically and creatively about how to improve its overall design, reach, and impact.

  • Oversee, edit, write, translate, and curate online news stories related to journalism and press freedom for a daily, trilingual news monitor.

  • Help promote LJR content on the Knight Center's social media accounts.

  • Coordinate special editorial projects for LJR, including content for grant-funded projects, and ensure that the content meets expectations and requirements.

  • Assist the Knight Center in seeking funding for LJR and its special projects.

  • Assist the team with editing, writing, and translating content for the Knight Center's other websites - JournalismCourses.org, KnightCenter.utexas.edu, and ISOJ.org.

  • Other related functions as assigned.

Required Qualifications

Bachelor's degree and at least two years of writing and editing experience at an English-language news organization. Fluency in English and proficiency in Spanish. Sound news judgment and demonstrated ability to write and edit news stories on deadline. Demonstrated ability to use social media in a journalistic capacity. Demonstrated ability to deal effectively with shifting priorities and a multitude of tasks. Professional demeanor, along with excellent verbal and written communication skills and high attention to detail. Ability to maintain punctual, dependable hours on a regular basis.

Relevant education and experience may be substituted as appropriate.

Preferred Qualifications

Experience in a newsroom setting. Proficiency in Portuguese. Experience with WordPress and Active Campaign

Salary Range

$53,000 + depending on qualifications
