Fabricates and repairs fixture component parts, tools, dies, jigs, templates, or machine parts from blueprint specifications or drawings with tolerances of plus or minus .0005 or less by performing the following duties.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

  • Obtains all data needed to perform assignments, determines tooling and machine requirements, operational sequence, and methods to be employed in initiating and performing job assignments with no supervisory assistance.
  • Performs complex set-up and layout operations by employing trigonometric tables, rotary table, dividing heads, templates, and jigs on milling machines. Performs simple layout using a dial indicator to true parts on milling machines and lathes.
  • Performs layout by transferring hole patterns from existing dies to tooling.
  • Fabricates and repairs fixture component parts, tools, dies, jigs, templates, and machine parts from blueprints and/or drawings with tolerances of plus or minus .0005 or less in a reasonable amount of time as determined by the supervisor.
  • Programs and operates CNC tool room equipment. Trouble shoots and repairs tooling and dies. Designs holding fixtures and jigs.
  • Calibrate measuring devices such as micrometers and calipers. Assist set up and maintenance personnel on tooling and die problems.
  • Assist Design Engineers in improving and modifying existing tools, dies and fixtures.
  • May be called on to serve as Department Lead person.
  • Completes OSHA required training as assigned by supervisor.
  • Reports all safety malfunctions, near hits, and/or injuries to supervisor immediately.

Required Skills

LANGUAGE SKILLS

Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Ability to speak effectively before groups of customers or employee organization.

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS

Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and to draw and interpret bar graphs.

REASONING ABILITY

Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form. Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS

State journeyman certification as Tool & Die Maker.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently exposed to moving mechanical parts and exposed to the risk of electrical shock. The employee is occasionally exposed to wet or humid conditions (non-weather). The employee is occasionally exposed to high, precarious places, fumes or airborne particles. The employee is occasionally exposed to toxic or caustic chemicals, and outdoor weather conditions. The employee is occasionally exposed to extreme cold (non-weather) and extreme heat (non-weather). The employee is occasionally exposed to vibration. The employee is exposed to moderate noise levels.

Personnel protective equipment such as safety glasses, hearing protection, protective sleeves, and steel toed shoes are required.

Required Experience

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE

  • High school diploma or general education degree (GED) equivalent.
  • Completion of state approved apprenticeship program as Tool & Die Maker.
  • Must be able to successfully complete a background and drug screen
  • Must be able to work all shifts and overtime
